To Parents of Sixth Grade Students:

For decades, sixth grade students at AMS and MVVS have attended a five-day residential environmental school program. This year we are excited to be attending The Ecology School in Saco, Maine. The scheduled trip for 2021-2022 school year is from April 11th to April 15th for the Dustin/Robinson team and the Mosby/Miller team. The Estabrook/Argeropoulos team, along with Downing/Rodon 6th grade class, and the sixth graders from Mont Vernon, will be attending The Ecology School during the week of May 9th to May 13th.

The Ecology School has a very informative website, which we encourage you to visit at www.the ecology It has information about their program, facilities, staffing, supervision, and a number of related topics. This letter released by The Ecology School has updated COVID mitigation protocols. The students will be in dorms of 3-4 students per room. Students will be assigned to small-size dining and study groups with consistent groupings as an additional mitigation factor.

The total cost of the trip, including the educational program, transportation, room and board, is $450.00 per student. To reserve a place for your son or daughter, please send in a check for $225. Please make it payable to your child's school (Amherst Middle School or Mont Vernon Village School) and place it in an envelope with your child's science teacher's name. The first payment needs to be returned by Friday, February 4th, 2022. The balance will be due Friday March 18th, 2022. If it is easier, you may pay the full amount ($450) in one check. If for any reason a student is unable to attend, all payments will be refunded. If financial hardship is the only reason your son or daughter would not attend, please contact Jayma Robinson ([email protected]) or your son or daughter's science teacher as soon as possible so that we can attempt to secure funds from other sources. Any requests for aid will be held in strict confidence.

There are two very important forms (registration & health) that need to be completed online. You will find directions at the end of this letter.
Both forms need to be submitted online, and both check payments must be given to your child's science teacher by
Friday, March 18th.

A packing list will be given out to help your child plan and prepare for the trip. Note that nothing special needs to be purchased, but it is important to have rain gear as lessons and activities go on, rain or shine.

There will be an informational meeting on Wednesday, February 2nd at 6:00 P.M. which will be held over Google Meets (

Otherwise, to join by phone, dial +1 669-241-1455 and enter this PIN: 277 378 613#

This meeting is for any parents of Amherst or Mont Vernon sixth graders and it will be an opportunity for you to learn more about the program. Students are welcome at this meeting, however there will be another meeting for the students held during the school day in March. If you have any questions in the meantime, please feel free to contact any of the sixth-grade teachers or visit the website for The Ecology School at
